Exporting a world from Lightwave?

Postby Dave Geenen » Sat Feb 19, 2005 12:09 am

Hello. I am trying to learn WireFusion by building a walk-thru of a room. I will appreciate any help on these questions:
1. Exporting a vrml object from Lightwave and importing to WireFusion is straightofrward but when I ask WireFusion to import the same object as a world I get the error message that WireFusion is 'Unable to create object'. I have been unable to import any worlds from Lightwave into WireFusion, only objects.
2. When the room has been imported into WireFusion as an object, I cannot zoom in closer than the nearest wall of the bounding box surrounding my objects. I cannot walk inside the bounding box. When I have carpet, I cannot walk on the carpet, only up to the edge of the carpet.
3. How can I keep the camera at a fixed height, for instance, eye height?
Thanks for any help.

There are some issues with Lightwave compatability that will be addressed with the 4.1 update. If you don't have 4.09 make sure you have that. Walkthroughs are very doable right now so you are in luck :) You can make some cool walthroughs by baking your lights.

For now, when you export from lightwave always use the embed objects option. Yes, this means no vertex animation.

Do not use layered objects in lightwave. Wirefusion will not read them properly yet.

When you import a 3d object into wirefusion as a 3d scene, it will use your lightwave camera position, height, and zoom factor.

Don't use surface values or light strengths over 100%

Lightwave walk-thru

Postby Dave Geenen » Wed Feb 23, 2005 6:36 am

Thanks Chris for your reply. You folks are lightyears ahead of me but I'm excited about the possibilities. I have posted my incomplete walk-thru on my website for whatever use it might be. It started in Lightwave 8 and was imported into WireFusion as an object. I cannot actually enter the room except if I enter by rotation. Since I imported this model I updated to 4.09 and now cannot import from anymore. I will try embedding as you say. Thanks again for the help.

For what you have, you will want to be importing as a scene and not as an object. If you dont want your viewers to be escaping your house, add some geometry to block them in. The camera won't(usually) go through polygons. You can set step height in the avatar tab of the wirefusion 3d scene config and let people walk up those stairs, but not jump off the deck

Back on walk-thru track

Postby Dave Geenen » Fri Feb 25, 2005 6:30 am

Thanks again for your comments, Chris. Much appreciated. I'm happy to say that I'm back on track with my walk-thru and model. I have learned that the model needs to be made from primitives to be able to import as a 3D world/scene. So now it's working great. What does the avatar radius mean? And what units is it working with for avatar height and avatar step?
The mind boggles at the possiblities.

Walk-thru model working and reposted

Postby Dave Geenen » Sat Feb 26, 2005 3:34 am

I have reposted my model. Like I said it is working great. A strange thing, though, I thought everything was working great and all of a sudden the keyboard navigation keys stopped working. They work in the WireFusion Preview window, but not in the browser preview window or not after being published. Until the mouse is used to move the model once, and then the keyboard navigation keys working fine.
