JVLC

Wowa. I'm not a programmer or anything but I think I have just seen what could be the solution to a lot of our "mpeg1 sucks" problems.

This project has managed to get VLC ported over to Java!

http://trac.videolan.org/jvlc/

There is a cool Java Webstart application that shows it's use and from what I can see it kicks major bootie.

http://www.myuniportal.com/download.php

It uses far less CPU power than Wire Fusion's current mpeg player, has stop, pause, rewind and a scrub bar and looks like it supports all the same codecs VLC does. Which means pretty much everything!

Can this be ported to a cool node? The source code is there. . .

The JVLC player seems to wrap the original VideoLAN player ("JVLC uses Videolan core as its core"). That means that an Applet has to be signed if it uses the JVLC player. The download size seems to be quite large as well. Also, it doesn't seem to work on OS X(?). I guess creating a WireFusion object of it wouldn't be too hard anyway and perhaps it could be usefull for offline presentation? We do have some other features in the pipe that we have to give higher priority though.

Perhaps this player could be an alternative? http://www.flumotion.net/cortado/

We are currently trying to add pause to the Video object btw. A bit more complicated than expected.

Hey I'll take any player at the moment. Would this one be less complicated to implement pause?

The Flumotion java applet doesn't have pause or rewind either. I guess thats something Java can't do? Man this is getting frustrating. The "Rich Media" portion of Java seems very under developed compared to other platforms.
